About Us

The Black Mountain News is a weekly publication dedicated to covering the Swannanoa Valley area.

Located at the home of Billy Graham, Brad Daugherty and Brad Johnson, the newspaper has a circulation of around 3,500.

The newspaper was founded in 1945 by James Clarence Cornelius and his brother-in-law, John Ealy, both of Indianapolis, Ind., and was purchased one year later by Gordon Greenwood, a local man who served for years as a state legislator from Black Mountain.

The first edition of The Black Mountain News hit the streets on September 6, 1945, with the headline of "Black Mountain and Swannanoa Now Have Their Own Newspaper."

Today, some seven decades later, The Black Mountain News continues the tradition of delivering accurate and timely information to the Valley both in print and online.

Through the years the newspaper has grown from a small 10-page paper with no color to the multisection newspaper it is today. The Black Mountain News also publishes special sections each year highlighting community events.

The Black Mountain News welcomes new advertisers in both the retail and classified sections of the newspaper. Our open rate for retail advertising is $8.50 per column inch. Contract rates for multiple runs are available. Classified line ads are $6 for 20 words and 10 cents for each word after that. For more advertising information, contact lfprince@gannett.com .
